בכלל, הספר מלא באמרות שפר השוות ציטוט כגון: "בין בני משפחתך יהיו אולי שיגידו להוריך שאין לך צורך במקצוע, הרי 'סוף סוף היא תתחתן'", "האם השכלה תיכונית משתלמת?", "האם את מפחדת לאבד את החן הנשי, אם תעסקי במקצוע מדעי או בעבודות חסרות רקע רגשי"?
מפגן הציטוטים האלה יכולים למלא פוסטים רבים ואף לתת השראה לבלוג שלם. נחמד לקרוא את הספר ולדעת שאני חיה בתקופה בה בחירה חופשית היא לא מילה גסה. היום אני יכולה לבחור ללמוד מה שאני רוצה (כל עוד זה מגיע עם תואר שני ממוסד מכובד), לעסוק במה שאני רוצה (כל עוד מדובר בארגון מכובד ושעות העבודה שלי לא יורדות מ- 60 בשבוע), ולהשפיע באמת על המשק הישראלי. אבל היי, לפחות היום, בעשור השני למילניום, אני יכולה להיכנס לזארה ולבחור בחירה חופשית מלאה. אני יכולה לבחור האם אני רוצה להיראות כמו בשנות ה- 70, ה- 80 או ה- 90. הלוא בשביל זה אני בניתי קרירה מלכתחילה?
Recently I run into a book called "12 to 16" (that’s a free translation of the Hebrew name, couldn’t find the original one). For those who are not familiar with it, and I'm sure you are many, the book guides teenagers how to act: from appearance, through room styling, manners, building character to choosing a career. The book was written in 1970, so I use the word "career" quite freely as the book emphasizes how to learn a trade for those empty years between high school to marriage, to which one can always come back to after turning 40 and sending the kids away from home…
In general the book is filled with sentences worth quoting as: "among your family members there will be those who will say you don't need a trade, you might get married at least", is high school education worthwhile?", " are you afraid to loose your feminine looks if you dealt with a scientific trade?"
This variety of quotes can feel many posts and even inspire a whole blog. It's nice to read the book and to know nowadays I live in a time where free choice is not a dirty word. Today I can choose to learn whatever I wish (as long as it comes with a dignified masters degree), to do whatever I wish (as long as it’s a dignified organization and my weekly hours are at least 60) and to have a real influence on the Israeli market. But hey, at least nowadays, in the second decade of the millennium, I can walk into Zara and choose feely. I can choose weather I want to look 70's, 80's or 90's. Isn’t that why I have a career in the first place?
